Why Do Local Governments Need GIS Strategies?

Geospatial information is part of our daily life and business. Many business areas in Local Government Authorities (LGAs) rely on Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) to deliver services to external customers or to support efficient internal daily operations. Usually, GIS solutions can be easily implemented and operated in any enterprise. The question is: if there is GIS operating then why would we need a GIS strategy?

How can programming be used in mapping? These days, maps just aren’t made up of lines and areas on a page. They are made up of very rich complex data. Each line can have a myriad of attribution detailing type of feature, use, width and more.

Programming or scripting is used to make this attribution into a very usable, visually pleasing product. We have created the Python Insights blog series to help other Python users by providing solutions to common problems and handy hints.

Harnessing KNIME Analytics

As part of my Cadetship at Spatial Vision, I designed and delivered an R&D project. After plenty of research, I chose to explore KNIME’s functionality, and how it can be applied within Spatial Vision. KNIME is a workflow based data transformation, analysis and deployment program.  Developed in Java using Eclipse as a free open source program, users are able to modify the base code of the program to suite their individual needs, allowing the creation of plugins to expand the functionality of KNIME.

Making Web Maps in Chinese

Recently, a client commissioned us to map a web map of Australia to distribute in China. Specifically, the use case called for a web map of Australia with Chinese language labels, so that Chinese native-speakers could easily interact with the map of Australia in their own language. Both states and capital cities needed labels, and of course the more readable the cartography underneath – the better.

Health Informatics Conference

Last week I attended the HIC Conference in Brisbane. This conference was run by the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) and highlighted innovation and the digital transformation of the healthcare sector. There was a focus on the central role that information and health informatics brings in connecting the health care system, being smart with data, and enhancing practitioner and consumer experience in healthcare interactions.
